Greetings, one and all,

The Colorado-Wyoming District Optimist Junior Golf Program is running a 36-hole tournament at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club, 4900 Himalaya Rd, Denver, Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16.  Both days will have 9:00 or 9:30 am shotgun starts, weather permitting.

In the past, we’ve had upwards of 100 junior golfers competing in this event.  These are some of the best junior golfers from Colorado and other states and several foreign countries.

General information about the event is available at https://optimist.org/golf/golf-tour5.cfm.

We need volunteers for both days.

          Shuttle drivers (8:45 am)
          On-course forecaddies (9:00 am – 2:30 pm)
          Scoring assistance (2:00 pm – 3:00 pm)

On Sun, Oct 16, there will be an awards ceremony following play, for which we also need volunteers.

Coffee and donuts for breakfast and a box lunch upon completion of the rounds will be provided.  A Colorado-Wyoming Optimist Junior Golf shirt will also be provided if you don’t have one.  If you have one, please bring it with you and wear it during the event.

SPEAKER
Our speaker today was Warren Mitchell- Division Chief Denver Fire Department Safety and Training Division. Chief Mitchell gave an excellent power point presentation regarding the high incidence of Cancer among fire fighters. Following are highlights of the Chief's presentation.
Cancer in Firefighters: Statistics
  • Leading cause of line-of-duty deaths
  • Risk correlates with length of service
  • Heat increasing exposure/absorption of toxic substances
  • Diagnosed 9X the rate of general population
  • 14% higher risk of death from cancer than the general Population

Cancer Risk in Males and Females Are Different
                                         Females                        Males
                                         Cervical                        Brain
                                         Thyroid                         Colon
                                         Bladder                         Kidney
                                         Breast                           Leukemia/lymphoma
This means we need to be vigilant about screening ALL firefighter for ALL types of cancer associated with firefighting
The DFD Wellness Screening Program gives valuable insight into the state of firefighter's body. Includes:

An excellent presentation by Chief Mitchell, very informative. After the presentation, the Chief was presented with a donation for the Denver Fire Department Foundation which helps fund further Cancer research.

T H E O P T I M I S T C R E E D — Promise Yourself . . . To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for
anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
