Due to inclement weather, there was no regular meeting this week. Instead, Paul Stratton, editor extraordinaire did a little research and came up with some good information. (Mostly!) and Ken Jeung furnished some pretty funny (mostly) cartoons.

Hi George - here’sMember picture some stuff if you want to put out an issue of GUMS even though we didn’t have a meeting.
I tried to search for the “World’s Best Joke”, and found two that were consistently mentioned:

A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says, “Thats the ugliest baby that Ive ever seen. Ugh!” The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her, “The driver just insulted me!” The man says, “You go right up there and tell him off—go ahead, Ill hold your monkey for you.”

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing, and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls 911. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says, "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence; then a gun shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says, "OK, now what?”

And in the spirit of our friend John Young, here are some quotes on optimism:

1. If I have the belief that I can do [something], I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning.” -Mahatma Gandhi

2. "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." -Anne Frank

3. "An optimist is someone who gets treed by a lion but enjoys the scenery." -Walter Winchell

4. "I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door - or I'll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present." -Rabindranath Tagore

5. "Forget about what you might have lost but instead focus on what you have room to gain." -Lindsey Rietzsch

6. "Work hard for what you want because it won't come to you without a fight. You have to be strong and courageous and know that you can do anything you put your mind to. If somebody puts you down or criticizes you, just keep on believing in yourself and turn it into something positive." -Leah LaBelle

7. "Successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past successes rather than their past failures, and on the next action steps they need to take to get them closer to the fulfillment of their goals rather than all the other distractions that life presents to them." -Jack Canfield

8. "No matter what you're going through, there's a light at the end of the tunnel and it may seem hard to get to it but you can do it and just keep working towards it and you'll find the positive side of things." -Demi Lovato

9. "There is only one optimist. He has been here since man has been on this earth, and that is man himself. If we hadn't had such a magnificent optimism to carry us through all these things, we wouldn't be here. We have survived it on our optimism." -Edward Steichen

10. Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” -Helen Keller

11. I am an optimist. I choose to be. There is a lot of darkness in our world, there is a lot of pain. You can choose to see that, or you can choose to see the joy. If you try to respond positively to the world, you will spend your time better.” -Tom Hiddleston

12. "When you wake up every day, you have two choices. You can either be positive or negative; an optimist or a pessimist. I choose to be an optimist. It's all a matter of perspective." -Harvey Mackay

13. "I'm an incurable optimist, and I'm a great believer in never looking back. Life is too short, and new challenges are exciting." -Cherie Blair
14. Optimism doesnt mean that you are blind to the reality of the situation. It means that you remain motivated to seek a solution to whatever problems arise.” -The Dalai Lama

15. "I am confident that, in the end, common sense and justice will prevail. I'm an optimist, brought up on the belief that if you wait to the end of the story, you get to see the good people live happily ever after." -Cat Stevens

16. "Stay positive and happy. Work hard and don't give up hope. Be open to criticism and keep learning. Surround yourself with happy, warm and genuine people." -Tena Desae

17. "In every day, there are 1,440 minutes. That means we have 1,440 daily opportunities to make a positive impact." -Les Brown

T H E O P T I M I S T C R E E D — Promise Yourself . . . .
  • To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
  • To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
  • To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
  • To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
  • To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
  • To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. T
  • o forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
  • To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
  • To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
  • To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
