Labor Day 2021 will occur on Monday, September 6. Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans, and is celebrated with parties, street parades and athletic events.
OPENING AND MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
There were no greeters this morning! Tom Hoch reminded this editor that the donuts at the last meeting were from Safeway, not King Soopers.

Jim Easton shared that it looked like it was 35% attendance day and that Josh Lipuma (one of our newer members) is his nephew.
Bryce Slaby has a greenhouse (unassembled) which he is willing to part with at the suggestion of his wife.(instructions are included.)
Everett Gardner was in the house - sans his purple beard.

INSTALLATION
Jeff Wilson was installed as an official member of the Monaco South Optimist Club by current President Dan Rodriguez.  Jeff who was brought in by the team of Phil Perington and Tom Kramis has been involved with Christmas trees and has been giving Tom some advice on how to get more trees this year, since there is a projected shortage.  Jeff has also been involved with auto parts and is a welcome addition to our club.

SUPER CITIZEN PROGRAM - LOWRY ELEMENTARY
Note from Paul Stratton
Yesterday Greg Young and I spoke at Lowry Elementary’s staff meeting and met the acting principal.  We went over the Super Citizen program and reacquainted ourselves with teachers we haven’t seen in a year. Greg also presented a check from the club for school supplies. We don’t have dates for assemblies on the calendar yet - I will follow up with the secretary.
The art teacher passed along this photo. Last spring one of her students, Elissa Lee, brought in her Super Citizen t shirt for a tie dye project. Pretty cool!

SPECIAL PROJECT
Steve Kady reports that Joe Marci has has found a home for a couple of boxes of Classical CD's that Russ Paul rescued from going to the trash.

The Club donated the 500 CD's to the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver.

Sarah Perske Music Library Superintendent accepted the boxes.

Now all we have to do is find a home for the 5000 L P albums.

BUDGETS FOR THE NEW YEAR: GET ‘EM IN!!
Our new Optimist year is fast approaching, and in preparation for a great year your team for next year is preparing budgets.  If you are doing a project, please let Pat Bush, Tom Kramis or Greg Young know your budget request.  These need to be in by September 20th as the budget will be finalized by the end of September.  If possible, budgets should be kept to a minimum as we expect another short tree lot season due to supplier shortages.

SPEAKER
Joe Marci is one of the prime movers of the Monaco South Optimist Club and is involved in a number of club activities. In addition to being a World class Bridge Player, an excellent bowler and an all around nice guy, Joe is a pretty darn good baseball player. Today Joe talked about some of the highlights of his baseball career.
Joe mentioned that he grew up on a farm and was around six feet tall and 200 pounds when he was 12. Mostly because of his stature, Joe was a catcher, although he played various positions throughout his career. In Joes early days in managed to hit one over the fence...and onto the hood of his uncle's car. Joe was known as a heavy hitter and, more than once, was intentionally walked after teams observed his batting prowess.
Joe played in upstate New York and, at one time, his coach was the mayor of Utica New York.

Baseball, Sport, Game, Catcher, Ball

Joe played in the Pony League and in the Kiwanis baseball program.  One of the highlights of his little league career was playing in Cooperstown (Home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, where he bounced one of the wall. He played college ball at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York.
After college Joe played in municipal leagues and coached both baseball and softball for his kid's teams.

In the lively Q&A session following Joe's presentation we learned the following:
  • Joe has never chewed tobacco or smoked a cigarette
  • He never got an allowance. Earned spending money farming a small plot on his father's farm and selling rhubarb and green onions at farmers market
  • His parents came from the Callabria region of Italy.
  • Because of a clerical error at Ellis Island Immigration Center, the family name changed from "Macri" to "Marci"
Although Joe had aspirations of playing professional ball as a youngster, he realized that earning a living playing baseball was not in the cards and continued playing baseball and softball as a recreational pastime.
Thanks to Joe for an interesting presentation and for all he does for MSOC!

HUMOR BY STEVE KADY

Dear God: Is it on purpose that our
Names are spelled the same, only in reverse?
DRAWING
With only 4 cards left in the deck, the pot stands at $40 and the card to draw is the King of Hearts.  How hard can it be to draw the right card out of only four. Well... 3 people tried
(Al Gapuzan, Dick Nickloff and Bill Litchfield) and none were successful.  Outside of the usual win by Jack Kleinheksel (twice), other cup winners were Bryce Slaby, Jeff Wilson and Bill Litchfield

T H E O P T I M I S T C R E E D — Promise Yourself . . . To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for
anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
