OPENING
The first Friday of May breaks sunny and warm and we are glad to gather this morning. President Dan rings the bell this morning promptly at 7.  It’s a new feature to see members gathered on the screen as well, the Zoom option still bringing people together in 2021.  Kudos to Tom Hoch for running the tech side of things, way to go Tom.
For today’s meeting, 34 members joined in person, 16 on zoom.
Craig Eley gives the invocation this morning.  The prayer today is for our mothers, and the love they provide.  A mother’s love is something that can always be counted on, whether we deserve it or not.  Above all, a mother’s love is priceless.  Craig then leads us in the pledge of allegiance.

GUESTS
On Zoom we have a guest, Scott Pearson is joining us for the third time. Who is the person who invited Scott and how can we get him on the roster?
King Soopers.eps
Frank Middleton talks about the King Soopers card program and reminds members to sign up for the grocery card.  Portions of the monies spent result in a percentage going to the club.  A short meeting will be held this morning to bring members up to speed on how the program works.  Get on board and let the club reap some of those benefits.

SULLIVAN SCHOLARSHIP
Joe Marci reports that last week after the meeting 5 members met to review the Sullivan Scholarship Award winners. The Sullivan Scholarships are named after Robert Sullivan, a parent and booster for the school for many years.  Joe Marci and Bob Sullivan worked together on running the booster club for the school among a myriad of other activities while their kids attended the school.  Bob and Joe continued to work with the school and the community for many years. Joe started the scholarship program in 1999 after Bob passed away.   In his name, the club is giving out $1000 scholarships this year.

Joe also reports that he only has 5 foursomes for the golf outing for Jr. Golf.  May 18 is the tournament.  Bob Meyer later reports  in conjunction with the golf outing May 18 they will be auctioning off  foursomes and has several courses who have donated.  Must be present to bid. Let’s get out and support Jr. Golf.  Joe also tells us that next week we will have elections for directors, and ballots are being put together at press time.

SUPER CITIZEN PROGRAM
Ron Cisco with Most Precious Blood Super Citizen and Family
A Super Citizen presentation was held at MPB on Tuesday, April 27, 2021.Mr. Super Optimist, Ron Cisco, was the presenter, and gave a stirring talk about "Attitude."  Indeed, it's all about attitude to get us through life with less stress.  Joe Marci, school representative, also imparted words of wisdom, as did Photographer Greg Young, who once again reminded the students to "Always give every living creature you meet a smile!"

Hamilton Middle School Super Citizen
Shown below are the Super Citizen Certificates (Both English and Spanish) created by "Dr. Bob" Finkelmeier.
After a year of not having a Super Citizen event at Hamilton Middle School, Tom Mauro announces the most recent assembly held last night, via zoom.  He reports it was one of the best they have ever had.  Lesley Meyer(Karl Geil's wife and teacher at Hamilton put a lot of effort into arranging an event that recognized 35 kids for going above and beyond for their school.  Big thanks for Dr. Bob Finkelmeier for preparing the certificates in a timely manner.  68 people attended virtually, including Dr. Christian Sawyer, Principal of Hamilton.  Teachers were able to speak about each student.  Karl Geil gave the presentation, focusing on the teachers and what they have done to continue reaching out to these kids during these unprecedented times.  What a great event.  It had been 15 months since a Super Citizen presentation had been done.  Way to go Lesley Meyer, Karl Geil, and Tom Mauro for getting this great event done.

Don Thomson currently works with McMeen, Ellis and Samuels schools and is looking for someone to take over as school representative for them.  Don has worked with the Super Citizen program for more than 20 years.  Don was the program director for many years as well.

Phil Perington has a human-interest story.  Recently Phil was showing a property to a prospective client ( Phil is in commercial real estate ).  He happened to be wearing his Optimist shirt and the prospect was enthused to utter, “do you know OC Larson?”.  OC was a long-time member of Monaco South Optimist Club.  OC’s smile and friendly demeanor were a great asset to any event. Phil is no slouch himself and responded, “yes, I knew OC!”.  Prospect goes on to say he attended not 1 but 2 breakfast meetings for MSOC, but didn’t recall why he didn’t come back. A great way to start a conversation is to wear your shirts and hats and have a talk with people in our community. President Dan reports that this is a great idea and perhaps we should get more apparel.  Looking for volunteers to make up an accessory committee.

Tom Mauro again takes the mic.  Tom appears to be on a mission to restore the good name of the United States Postal Service.  He had a problem with a purported 3rd party purchase from Amazon recently.  It was an ice Tea maker, for $60.   Having been notified of the items delivery, Tom alerted the proper authorities, he had most certainly not received said package.  He contacted the prospective carriers only to discover, our very own USPS was the delivering service used for this transaction.  He enlisted the help of his own mail carrier, who was able to follow the deal to fruition and find further data for Tom.  After some investigation they discovered they package had been delivered to 5060 Clay Street.  Tom’s friend lives close to this address and is planning to investigate the situation.  Stay tuned.

Bob Avery recently sold their home, inspection revealed some items needing repair including sewer repair.  Bob has an adjustable basketball hoop that is looking for a new home.

Frank Middleton tells us about the lunch yesterday put together by Mark Metevia at Zanes.  As a result, Bob Sweeney, the publisher of the Villager Newspaper, agreed to join the club.

Mark Metevia acknowledges Don Roth who was in the hospital recently and joins us this  morning, in person and is looking good.

Do we have a drawing?  Ace of Hearts is the lucky card.  Jack Kleinheksel has the 1st card, Mike White has the next ticket, Frank Ross takes another cup.  Your editor draws a card, Phil Perington draws another card that is not the correct one.  Ron Cisco takes another cup.  Jack takes another draw at the card.  No winner this week.

Phil has a quiz:  We know that April showers bring May flowers, but what do Mayflowers bring?  Pilgrims and furniture.

T H E O P T I M I S T C R E E D — Promise Yourself . . . To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for
anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
