A LIFE WELL LIVED
John Walsh a long time member since 1994 died after a lengthy illness in June of 2020. Due to his illness he was unable to attend our meetings, but kept his membership current.
Due to the pandemic his internment at Ft. Logan National Cemetery was postponed until November 3, 2021. He was a model ship builder, built products at the request of teachers for kids with special needs, and he even built a sail boat in his garage which he sailed at Cherry Creek Reservoir.
He is survived by his wife Elaine who resides at Holly Creek Retirement Center.

Joe Marci asked us to keep Russ Paul in our thoughts and prayers. He is in the VA hospital right now, hopefully not for long.
Don Roth reminded us that Leo Haegele's memorial service is coming up this week. It will be Wednesday, November 10th at Ft. Logan, Stage C.
Steve Kady still recovering from knee replacement, but should be back soon.

Invocation: Tom Hoch delivered our invocation today, with a reminder to look at the sunny side of everything. In difficult or sorrowful times, let us resolve to redouble our efforts toward making our optimism come true. He then let us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Here is the scoop on the upcoming train show which has been an annual Xmas train show since 1974. It is put on by the Train Collector's Assn. that is a national group only focused on toy and model trains. There will be approximately 180 selling tables of trains, operating layouts, Santa Clause and for scouts a Railroading Merit Badge offered for those who participate in the learning.

CHRISTMAS TREE LOT
Tom gave us a reminder that we are in need of Christmas Tree lot day managers. Please reach out to Tom if you are able to cover the schedule management for one of the days. This year we will have over 1,500 trees, which is quite a few more than last year. There are three different sources. Due to the dearth of teamsters, delivery schedules are a little iffy, but we plan on a shipment of 650 trees arrival on November 12 or 13. and will need some help unloading, with another shipment arriving on November 19-21 will be big days for offloading trees and setting up the lot, so mark your calendars! Joe Marci says that the wreaths we sell at the tree lot will be pre-decorated this year, so no need to sharpen your design skills. Also, Joe was able to get a generator and help with the power set up for the tree lot, which is great.
Greg Young says that during the November 19th Friday morning meeting, there will be training provided for those men who will be working as cashiers at the tree lot. If you want to work in the warm trailer, come on the 19th to learn how to use the credit card machine.
Michael Chavez announced that we have 62 Thanksgiving baskets to deliver on Saturday November 20th at 8:00 am, so please join Michael before heading over to the tree lot. He will also need help on Thursday November 18th to take baskets to the Boys and Girls club.
SUPER CITIZEN
Lowry Elementary conducted their first Super Citizen assemblies of the year Friday afternoon via Zoom. The 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms were in the first group, followed by the 4th and 5th graders. Each teacher turned their laptop camera toward the students who sat together on the floors of their rooms. The principal and other teachers and staff joined from their offices, and several parents joined from home or work. Greg Young and Paul Stratton participated representing Monaco South. 12 students were honored as Super Citizens, including two from Ethiopia and one native Spanish speaker, who had the speech from his teacher delivered in two languages. A bit different than a traditional assembly, but the principal and the teachers did a good job keeping the energy up and celebrating the kids.
SPEAKER -CHUCK BLASFEILD
Frank Middleton introduced our guest speaker today, Chuck Blasfeild, who is CEO, Denver Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. Attending with Chuck was future Council President Christopher Sherry, CEO and President of Merrick and Company.
Chuck had been with Boy Scouts of America in Orlando, Atlanta and Sacramento before coming to Denver, and has been a Rotarian for 25 years. He started his remarks by reciting the Scout oath and law. He feels that the Scout law is the center from which all scouting success grows.
Chuck had a few comments but mostly wanted to have a Q and A session with our group.
He feels the number one benefit received from Scouting is building grit, which can set youth up for success in all areas of life.
The national organization is in bankruptcy, and he’s hopeful by the first of the year it should be restructured and able to move forward. The Denver council is financially stable. The Denver Council is also choosing to participate in a survivor’s fund the national organization is developing.
Chuck says adding girls to their programs has been successful, and 18 girls received Eagle designation this past year
Traditionally, the Denver area recruits about 4,000 new scouts each year. There were 500 in 2020, and approximately 2,000 in 2021. So marketing efforts are important as they work toward a rebound post-pandemic. Chuck hopes to work with other youth-serving organizations to present a unified front and to deepen relationships with Denver school districts.
