Early Morning Conversations:
Noel Hasselgren opened with an interesting question.. “Why was the chicken listening to a short wave radio? So it could have ham and eggs for breakfast. Now we know.  Ron Cisco was in session for the 1st time and received a round of welcomes and sidebars. Bryce “don’t call me Bruce” Slaby and Tom Hoch were facing each other for the first time this year in a cage match of battling jokesters. Ron Gustas and Keith Gallaway noted that smaller pictures of members on the screen were easier to take. Mike White, wearing his ever present shamrock hat brightened the screen. Peter Dimond and Frank Middleton exchanged sporty ways to reload King Soopers cards and a voice chimed in sharing sympathy and concern for the hundreds of San Padre sea turtles who had washed up on the beach in Texas. Andy Towt and Everett Gardner looked like they had finally joined the Duck Dynasty or ZZ Top family. Allen Pierce was driving to the office and chimed in on his I-phone.

Speaker
Member picture
Our speaker for the day is our own Frank Middleton.  Frank has long been an advocate of using the special programs of the OI Foundation which provide more direct benefit to individual clubs, i.e., moneys contributed by those who wish to have their contributions go directly to the club, as opposed to the overall foundation, can use these special provisions to do so.  What follows is an excellent source of information about these programs, authored by Frank Middleton.  Thanks for all you efforts Frank!

OI FOUNDATION PASS THROUGH AND CLUB CAMPAIGN PROGRAMS
Feb 19, 2021 #3
The program today is not about asking or begging for money to support
Monaco South projects. It is about creating an awareness of how members
of Monaco South could make contributions to Monaco South projects. Why
is this more important today than in the past? The tree lot in a normal year
generates enough profit to run all our service projects for a year. With Covid
this year’s tree lot did well but nothing like the past.
Todays program is different from we give for example a dime a day to OIF.
Here the money goes directly to OIF tax deductible and stays there. The
only direct way that money comes back to Colorado kiddos is through the
scholarships for essay and oratorical. This could be a fraction pennies on
the dollar of of the money that was donated.
Todays program is about giving tax deductible donations to Monaco South.
A big benefit of giving to Monaco South is that 100% of your donation stays
here in Colorado and 100 cents on the dollar goes to the kiddos.
Let’s say a member of Monaco South wants to give $100, $500, $1,000, to
support a Monaco South project such as the Brain Bowl, Super Citizen, and
Christmas baskets.
If he makes the check out to Optimist Club of Monaco South, he has made a
nice donation, he feels good BUT he has gotten NO TAX DEDUCTION.
Why is this so? Because the Optimist Club of Monaco South does not
have 501c3 tax status. The Optimist International Foundation is a 501c3
charitable organization.
OI applied to the IRS to make all clubs in the US non profit 501c3 clubs
eligible to accept tax deductible contributions. The IRS did not approve the
proposal.
Optimist International realized this was a problem so they established 2
different programs so that local clubs could receive tax deductible
contributions. The programs are called the Pass Through program for short
term money donations that will be used by the club in the next year and Club
Campaign program for long term donations like an endowment or to
accumulate funds for a special big capital intensive project.

PASS THROUGH PROGRAM
The first program we are going to talk about today is the pass through
program. It is called the pass through program because your money passes
through the OIF and back to Monaco South.
When you make a donation to Monaco South you can designate what project
you would like to support or leave it up to the current board where they think
the money would do the most good.
Keep in mind 100% 100 pennies of every dollar goes to youth projects in Denver and
Colorado
1. Super Citizen Program
2.Eagle Scout Recognition Banquet
3.Know Brainer Competition
4.Bill Walter’s Boys and Girls Thanksgiving Dinner
5.Sullivan Scholarships
6.Thanksgiving Baskets
7.Christmas Baskets
8.Cub Packs and Boy Scout Troops
9.T J Craft Fair
10.JOOI Clubs
11.Hamilton Reading Program
12.Colorado History Day
13.Operation Student Supplies
14.Brain Bowl
15.Junior Golf
Suppose I want to give money to Monaco South using my will, obituary, and life insurance? For example in your obituary you could name the Optimist International Foundation fbo of Optimist Club of Monaco South, 3983 S Olive St. Denver 80237 as a place you would prefer donations go in your memory in lieu of flowers. The donors are being instructed to mail the check to the Treasurer of the club. You do not need to name a project. If no project is named currently the funds are being designated for the Super Citizen program at the discretion of the Board.

CLUB CAMPAIGN FUND
Introduction:
Club Campaign Fund – This is a great benefit to clubs at the local level. Monaco South can accept tax deductible contributions.
A. Used by 161 Optimist clubs across the United States and Canada
B. Over $1,600,000 sitting in these tax deductible OI Foundation Club Campaign accounts in St Louis.
1. Donations from members for a specific project i.e., Brain Bowl, Bill Walters Boys and Girls Club, Super Citizen, Christmas baskets, Sullivan Scholarship Fund.
2. Donations must support literacy, educational or charitable
programs of Monaco South.
3. Monaco South funds in this account earn 3% simple interest.
That is a very good return on liquid money. The funds are invested with
American Funds one the largest and most respected mutual fund companies
in the country. There is still market risk.
4. Funds must sit in account for 3 months i.e., you want to contribute to Bill Walters Boys and Girls Club Dinner you can donate now and we use the money in November.
5. How many different Monaco South projects can have money sitting in the Club Campaign fund earning 3% interest and just waiting to be used? As many accounts as we have charitable, literary or educational projects that need funding.
6. Greg Young who is the contact person on the account writes a
letter to the OI Foundation requesting a minimum withdrawal from the account of $500 for example using $400 for Junior Golf and $100 for Brain Bowl.
8. If there is money in the Club Campaign Account for the Brain Bowl and we are no longer doing this project we simply tell OI what charitable, literary or educational project we used the money for.
9. If a club disbands what happens to the money in the Club Campaign Account. The last person out the door can name the OI Foundation or any other Optimist Club to receive the money.
10. is there a minimum amount I need to donate at one time to the Capital Campaign Program. No you can do $50, $125, $500 or $5000 what ever floats your boat.
11. How much money can Monaco South have in the Club
Campaign Fund? The sky is the limit.
12. The Bottom Line: If you want to give a tax deductible contribution to the Optimist Club of Monaco South make your check out to OI Foundation and give it to Greg Young. 100% of your contributions will be used for the kids in Southeast Denver. This is a way of giving back to Monaco South and funding youth projects in Southeast Denver. The Club Campaign Fund is for a project that will occur at least 3 months down the road. For example you want to give to the Bill Walters Boys and Girls Club dinner now for a November event.

T H E O P T I M I S T C R E E D — Promise Yourself . . . To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for
anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
