NIAGARA FALLS CANADA  - OPTIMIST CONVENTION - AT NIGHT
On a warm morning that foretold of a record setting 102-degree day, Kevin Dempsey and Paul Stratton greeted a large crowd of grinning Optimists on this Friday, July 12, 2024.

InvocationBob Halvorson was back at the mic for the second straight week to deliver our invocation.  He shared a message about looking at the sunny side of everything, despite the difficulties life might present.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER
President Casey Funk welcomed our lone Zoom attendee, the esteemed Tom Hoch.  It’s warm in Denver, and it looks at least as warm wherever Tom is.
Casey thanked Tom Glazier for running the meeting last week while our President was in South Dakota.
The Board meeting was this past Monday. Ken Jeung made chicken which was a huge hit and clearly the highlight of the meeting.  As usual, breakfast was discussed.
Also, there was a conversation regarding club dues for next year, which the options seeming to be hold steady or increase.  The decision will be made at the August meeting, and then the full membership will vote.  Our club has increased a net 5 new members this year.

Club Announcements:

Dr. Bob Finkelmeier - peach deliveries are happening again this year, with delivery probably in late August.  Look for a sign up sheet from Bob soon.

Pat Bush gave all of us a two-week deadline to submit budget requests for the next fiscal year.  Be sure the projects that you spearhead are funded!

Tom Glazier gave us a heads up that our speakers in the first week of September are from an organization called House of Hope.  Part of their fundraising comes from selling loaves of bread, and Tom may coordinate us ordering bread in advance that can be delivered at the meeting.

SPEAKER
Mark Metavia introduced today’s speaker, our own Paul Simon, a Past President of Monaco South and a Past District Governor.
Paul has been working for 9 years with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute(0LLI) at Denver University.  OLLI is a membership program designed for adults 50 and over, who wish to pursue lifelong learning in a relaxed non-competitive atmosphere. There are no tests, grades, or academic requirements – only a desire to learn and a curious nature.  The four pillars of OLLI are cognitive, social, physical and spiritual.  The program at DU is one of 125 in the country.  It began in 1996 as Viva, and then merged and received funding from the Bernard Oscher Foundation.

OLLSchool LogoI has three campuses, and Paul is the Central district manager.  Pre-pandemic, there were 3,200 students taking classes at OLLI, and that number fell to less than 1,800.  With new offerings such as OLLI on the Move, which brings classes to libraries and senior living facilities, they are back up to 2,200.  Paul sets up relationships with organizations for OLLI to partner with.  There are 3 8-week terms during year, and OLLI also sponsors trips such as to New York and Japan. All teachers are volunteers, and Paul has taught some classes.  Please check out the website below - the new calendar of classes comes out on August 12th.  There will be a wide range of topics including Emotional Intelligence, Literature, Visual and Performing Arts, Theology.  Classes will be held online and in person.  In 2020 classes were 100% online, and now in person classes are back to 50% of the offerings.
Paul then shared one of his other passions - 1960’s music trivia.  Questions and answers included Teenage Tragedy Songs (Death Discs or Splatter Platters) and the session band The Wrecking Crew.

Did You Know
The first British artist to have a song on the American Top 40 was Acker Bilk in May of 1962 with “Stranger on the Shore”.

The first British Band with the #1 song on the American Top 40 was The Tornados with “Telstar” in December 1962.

After The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, the English band with the most Top 40 hits in the 1960’s was Herman’s Hermits.

WE HAD A DRAWING!
The 8 of Clubs was the ticket to a pot full of $70.  Cups of cash went to:

Ed Leuty
Carl Brown
Patrick Morgan
Kevin Dempsey - twice!
Tom Mauro

Tom Glazier eschewed the opportunity for a cup, and it is a good thing!  Dame Fortune was on his side, and he plucked out the 8 of Clubs and went home $70 richer.  Congrats Tom!

Nametag drawing:  In a somewhat cruel move, President Casey Funk still drew a wooden coin.  In doing so, he let Phil Perington know that if Tom had not been so lucky, Phil would have had a shot.  But alas, the pot is now empty.

CREED
Today our Creed was started off by our speaker, Paul Simon“Promise Yourself, to be so strong…”
A LITTLE HUMOR FROM STEVE KADY
  1. When I say, "The other day," I could be referring to any time between yesterday and 15 years ago.
  2. I remember being able to get up without making sound effects.
  3. I had my patience tested. I'm negative.
  4. Remember, if you lose a sock in the dryer, it comes back as a Tupperware lid that doesn't fit any of your containers.
  5. If you're sitting in public and a stranger takes the seat next to you, just stare straight ahead and say, "Did you bring the money?"
  6. When you ask me what I am doing today, and I say "nothing," it does not mean I am free. It means I am doing nothing.
  7. I finally got eight hours of sleep. It took me three days, but whatever.

T H E O P T I M I S T C R E E D — Promise Yourself . . . To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for
anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
