President Tom Kramis gaveled the meeting to order at 7:00 a.m. and thanked greeters Frank Middleton and Chris Dunphy for their excellent service and
Tom asked Joe Marci to read the invocation, which contained several Martin Luther King Jr quotes and ideas. We all recited the Pledge.
Breakfast burrito’s with green chili and fresh watermelon & cantaloupe cups from Café duFrance was on the menu this morning. Note: We are guaranteeing 25 meals per meeting and urge everyone to  enjoy the delicious buffet every Friday Morning. Next week 2/21 will be a thank you breakfast for the 1st Annual Oscar Awards ceremony and as a thank you to members, the cost of dining will be reduced to $5.00.
Tom Mauro mentioned that the Hamilton Middle School Charles Korsoski Award Plaque had been lost and would need to be replaced.  He asked Super Citizen Reps to check with schools and see if any others were needed. Since the award is 35 years old, there is a good possibility that one (or more) other schools may also need a new one. Tom will check with Dan Rodriguez to see if he can make new ones.
Mark Metevia shared several things:
  • He and his wife Illene have recently recovered from Covid 19. Both are doing well.
  • Since Mark missed last week's meeting, he remembered Oscar Sorensen as his role model. Oscar was Club President in 1987-88, Mark was President 1994-95
  • Mark suggested we could support Marshall Fire Victims by taking donations to local Good Will marked "Marshall Fire". Good Will will deliver them to appropriate facilities.
Joe Marci asked for some help in staffing the booth for Optimist Junior Golf at the Golf Expo, which will be held Feb 25-27 at the Colorado Convention Center.  If interested contact Joe at: 303-847-7844.
Our speaker for the day was our own Harry Fegley, who has been building model boats for a number of years. Harry explained that, while there are all kinds of model boat kits around, plastic models are no good for actual putting in the water (they're just for looks and not very authentic.) Harry also does not build "ships in a bottle". Harry works mostly with solid hulls, which require no work below decks and therefore, much less time (only 600+ hours!). Harry explained the detail which goes into the decking and rigging and the time and energy that one spends in building these models, most of which are actually, "seaworthy".
Harry talked about the time he built a radio-controlled model of "the Endeavour", which promptly sunk when he put it in the water, because he failed to consider the center of gravity when building it.  He also built a beautiful paddle-wheel, which he knocked off the shelf it was on, after putting in over 400 hours of work on it.
Harry decided to build a model of a barge, which traveled the Chesapeake & Ohio canal, for his brother.  Since there were no kits for this, Harry had to make this model totally from scratch, using plans from original construction. An amazing feat! Thanks to Harry for sharing with us today and especially for bringing in his very delicate ship model! Thanks to Greg Young for technical support!

T H E O P T I M I S T C R E E D — Promise Yourself . . . To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for
anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
