Curt Boell ran the show as a solo greeter this morning. He enthusiastically welcomed a modestly sized and slightly boisterous crowd on this post-Independence Day meeting, Friday, July 5th, 2024.
Tom Glazier took to the stage, pinch-hitting for President Casey. It is Camaraderie Day, and Frank Middleton decided to see who was paying attention to the club calendar and would sit at a different table than usual without having to be told. Either that or he forgot his deck of cards. Hard to say.
Our invocation today was delivered by Bob Halvorson. Bob’s timely message talked about the promotion of patriotism being a obligation of all Optimist Club members. Patriotism is the love of one’s country, while nationalism is the hatred of other countries. He then led us in the Pledge Of Allegiance.
PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Presently, the only presidential announcement is that the President is not present.

This note from Bob Avery (who took part in the ride:
Hi George,
I won't be at the next couple of meetings and so I won't be able to report on the BikeMS ride. The ride itself was great, the volunteers cheering us on were great and the weather stayed on the not so hot side. Thanks to all the Monaco South and Tamarac folks who came out early on a Sunday morning to help I really appreciate their efforts. If people would like to still donate to the ride, they just need to click on the link in my email to them and follow the prompts. If they don't think they got an email from me have them check their junk folder or click on this link...

MEMBER NEWS
Zabih Danesh let us know that he has taken on a nickname, which he thinks will make it easier for people to pronounce and remember. So, he asked that we call him
Zeb going forward. Zeb and his family arrived in the U.S. on 07/03/2023, so yesterday was his second 4th of July. He is an asylum seeker and has the necessary work clearances to be hired by any employer. He has a master’s in computer science and was halfway to his PhD when he had to flee Afghanistan. He was a professor teaching computer science in Kabul and also has experience in translating. He is looking for IT or teaching employment and would appreciate any leads.
Paul Simon in the house! Many warm welcomes and pats on the back greeted Past President Paul Simon as he joined our meeting after a too-long absence.
Joe Marci asked that we keep Russ Paul in our thoughts. Russ is in the hospital and struggling with communicating.
DRAWING
After a long stretch of camaraderie, it was then that a Drawing commenced!
The King of Clubs held the key to a bounty of $60.
Tom Glazier and Frank Middleton had visions of the big bucks, but alas, came up empty.
Cups of cash went to:
Patrick Morgan
Bill Litchfield
Gary Jerman
Karl Geil
Tom Mauro
Pat Bush
Dr. Robert Finkelmeier, who may be the only member of our club to have never purchased a ticket for the drawing, did get a chance to find the lucky card when his name tag was on at just the right time. However, the king escaped him.
Tom Glazier asked Dave Peck to close our meeting by starting us off on reciting the Optimist Creed: “Promise Yourself…”
A LITTLE HUMOR
1. When one door closes and another door opens, you are probably in prison.
2. To me, "drink responsibly" means don't spill it.
3. Age 80 might be the new 60, but 9:00 pm is the new midnight.
4. It's the start of a brand-new day, and I'm off like a herd of turtles.
5. The older I get, the earlier it gets late.
